Wherever I travel I encounter former Occupiers.
And when I do I ask them to tell me their story.
"Who were you before Occupy? And who are you now?"
I've heard from Occupiers who met their future wife at a general assembly. Or gave birth in a taxi on the way to an Occupy action. Or quit their job on Wall Street to pursue socially engaged journalism. Or hit rock bottom and are scraping by on food stamps. Some stories give me shivers. Others make me cry. Every story helps me see Occupy in a new way.
Now, in commemoration of the seven year anniversary of Occupy, I want to hear your story.
Call me at (646) 760-7212 and leave a message. Tell me: "Who were you before Occupy and who are you now?"
In the weeks ahead I'll share some of the stories that I hear.
ALL DAY. ALL WEEK.AMBUSH WALL STREET
On September 15, ex-employees of Lehman Brothers are celebrating the 10 year anniversary of the financial collapse with ostentatious parties in London, New York, Hong Kong, Germany and elsewhere. These folks played a significant role in exacerbating the financial crisis of 2008 and now they laugh, drink and debauch. No wonder exact locations of their disgraceful parties are a heavily guarded secret...But I bet at least a few of these former bankers are disillusioned enough to leak the location.
And wouldn't it be grand if a cadre of activists pulled off a very special Ambush at one, or two, of these Lehman Bro bacchanals? That'll sober them up.
AMBUSH WALL STREET is a leaderless protest. If you want to organize for AMBUSH WALL STREET in your city, don’t ask permission - just do it! Simultaneous aboveground actions on September 15 are being organized by the Change Finance coalition and the #10YearsOn campaign.
